A seminar on “Localising Sustainable Development”

A seminar held on January 3, 2023, entitled “Localising Sustainable Development” with the joint initiative of the International Research Center by SIMEC Institute and Innovation and Development Associates (iDEA) Foundation. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, the Vice Chairman of iDEA Foundation and Former Principal Coordinator (SDGs), Prime Minister’s Office was the honorable chief guest of this program. The keynote was presented by Professor Dr. Dora Marinova, the Director of Curtin University Sustainability Policy(CUSP) Institute, Australia.

Prof. Dr. Marinova delivered her speech on Localising Sustainable Development by integrating UN SDGs. She emphasized on the Blue Economy and application of creativity on the ground of localization. She has also discussed the recent SDGs initiatives by the government administrators in different districts and upazilas in her speech. The special guest was Prof. Dr. Julia Richardson, the Head, School of Management and Law, Curtin University, Australia. She expressed wish to conduct the research program of Curtin University PhD students with the International Research Center of SIMEC Institute of Technology and iDEA Foundation.

Other speakers were Dr. Moazzem Hossain, Ex. Additional Secretary and Advisory Consultant of SDGs Action Research, SIMEC Institute of Technology; Dr. Asif Siddiqui, Managing Director of Circular Economics Pte. Ltd.; Hossain Samad, Lead Researcher, iDEA Foundation. The seminer was chaired by the president of SIMEC Institute of Technology, Professor Engr. Dr. Md. Monirul Islam.

The discussants prioritized to set sustainable initiatives in terms of equity. Key speech terms were the usage of renewable energy, gender-based sustainability, and the utilization of natural resources to restore the development administration.  Dr. Ratan Kumar Roy, Chief-Coordinator, International Research Center, SIMEC Institute of Technology welcomed the distinguished guests. The National Coordinator of SDG Model Village Bangladesh, Muhammad Sharifur Rahman has coordinated this seminar as the long-term approach of SDG Action Research for the last five years. Several research activities are being conducted through International Research Center with different universities globally including Curtin University and the University of Sunshine Coast in Australia. As part of that, government and private officials, researchers and academia from Bangladesh have the opportunities to participate in education, research, and short courses in Australia.

In the speech of the chief guest, Mr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad encouraged women and youth to come forward to implement the SDGs by participating in the capacity development programs. It will be easy to speed up local development with the help of local public representatives, mentors, and everyone. He appreciated the initiatives taken by SIMEC as a landmark step in the sustainable development of the country. He highly appreciated the participation of the youth in the implementation of the SDG Model Village.
