Mr. MonzurulIslam retired from Bangladesh Railway as the Additional Director General afterservingover 30 years. He held various positions there, and was involved in management, procurement and construction related to rail operations, maintenance and development. AstheChief Planning Officer in Bangladesh Railway, he was involved in infrastructure development (railway track and signaling) and rolling stock procurement projects. He worked on Trans Asia Railway Network (TAR), BIMSTEC, and BBIN; and several projects funded by World Bank, ADB, JICA and EDCF.
One of the major highlights of Mr.Islam’s career was his involvement in the construction of Padma Multipurpose Bridge project and Bangabandhu Bridge. He was the Superintending Engineer of Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project, working in the construction of 100km long dual gauge railway line. In the construction of Bangabandhu Bridge, he was responsible for resettlement, dealing with payment of compensation, land acquisition, gender issue, livelihood and income generation programs for the project-affected people.
In addition to serving as a government staff, Mr. Islam also worked for international and private companies. He worked as the National Railway Reform Specialist with PricewaterhouseCoopers Pvt. Ltd (PwC),preparing benchmark for assessment of railway manpower practice in the subcontinent and South-East Asia, recommending 50,000 plus employees for Bangladesh Railway,inclusion of railway development wing, design and standardization cell, ICT cell, mechanization and modernization of railway maintenance system. He was involved in preparing revised recruitment rules, job descriptions and manpower organogram for Bangladesh Railway.
